A Second Chance: Saving Lives Through Timely Intervention at Broadwell

Ukanya (name changed), a teenage girl with diabetes, arrived at Broadwell Christian Hospital's (BCH) emergency ward in critical condition - unconscious, with blood sugar at a staggering 1030 mg/dL and severe diabetic ketoacidosis. Rushed over 300 km by ambulance, she was stabilized with fluids, insulin therapy, and monitoring, thanks to the team's swift action. Under India's AB-PMJAY scheme, her treatment was free, and she walked out days later, smiling - a testament to how timely care prevents crises.

This intervention was powered by Mina Fund-supported equipment. Our CAD $3,500 investment in multiparameter monitors enabled real-time tracking of vital signs for over 360 emergency patients since installation, while CAD $1,830 for infant warmers has saved 1,115+ low-birth-weight babies. In a similar vein, Dr. Prerna Chohla's story of successfully intubating a 2-month-old infant with fever and seizures highlights the critical role of these tools in high-stakes moments. Our records confirm ongoing impacts in 2024-2025, helping BCH serve 14,600 inpatients, with a 65% inpatient rise during that period.

BCH, founded by Dr. Mina MacKenzie in 1909, continues her legacy of accessible healthcare. The Mina Fund's CAD $145,000+ since 2012 has boosted patient trust, contributing to this recent growth.

Your contributions ensure such quality healthcare reaches the extremely poor, breaking poverty cycles through life-saving interventions.
