On August 15, 2025, BCH dedicated the Sarina Bayer Inclusive Play Area. Designed to empower children with disabilities, it includes a welcoming space with accessible paths, therapy tools, a universal washroom and a hand-painted aviary. This CAD $6,320 Mina Fund project fosters physical, cognitive, and social development. Separately, our CAD $1,700 investment in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) equipment (2024) - a specialty focused on restoring function and improving quality of life through therapy - has provided essential tools like walkers and crutches to enhance the department's overall capabilities.
In 2024-2025, these enhancements supported BCH's growth, including restarted ultrasound services (CAD $34,200 Mina Fund investment) which supported 223 antenatal cases (between October 2024 and March 2025), and a new laparoscopic set (CAD $13,500) driving a 74% surgery surge.
Overall, BCH served 14,600 inpatients and 19,409 outpatients, and Dr. Sherina J Santosh, a consultant in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) - a field enhancing recovery through therapy - leverages these upgrades to support improved patient outcomes.
Honouring Sarina Margurite Bayer, this area breaks isolation for rural families, aligning with Dr. Mina MacKenzie's 1909 founding vision of compassionate care.
The Mina Fund provides quality healthcare to the underserved, ending poverty through inclusive opportunities.
